Ahead of the 2023 Asian Cup: AFC Checks Stadiums in Indonesia

CARITA TODAY, -
At least seven AFC representatives made their first inspection of the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta yesterday afternoon. Today they are scheduled to see Manahan Stadium in Solo to do the same.

PSSI Secretary General Yunus Nusi said AFC representatives wanted to ensure that all facilities were met, such as the main venue, training ground, and hotel for lodging 24 teams.

"PSSI welcomes the arrival of AFC representatives to check the stadium which is a candidate for the 2023 Asian Cup match. After the bidding documents were received, the AFC immediately planned their arrival on September 1-4, 2022," Yunus explained as reported by PSSI's official website.

“The AFC's arrival agenda is indeed quite short. Their inspection team is divided into several teams, where each team only conducts inspections for 1-4 days. What they make sure is that the bidding documents and venues submitted are in their original state with all the facilities that meet the standards for the Asian Cup level.”

The AFC representative was actually scheduled to go to Australia to check. However, the Australian football federation (FAA) has issued a statement withdrawing from the bid for the hosts.

Initially, Australia along with Indonesia, Qatar and South Korea came forward as host candidates to replace China, which withdrew due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They even sent Expressions of Interest (EOI) or proposals of interest last July.

Australia is actually more interested in hosting the 2026 Women's Asian Cup. With the resignation, the AFC representatives immediately went to South Korea, and continued to Qatar on September 8-10.

"We maintain a strong interest in bidding to host the 2026 Asian Cup, and will submit a formal and comprehensive bid to the AFC within the required deadline later this year," the FAA said in a statement.
